The remote Uncompahgre Wilderness in Colorado's San Juan mountains is a stunning backdrop for any story. Miles from paved roads. Base elevation of about 12,500 feet. Miles of trekking to reach your camp.

This is where we set out to tell a simple story; a man (adventure athlete Chris Brinlee Jr) who wanted to have a better understanding and connection with the food he was eating, so he embarked on a journey to learn and train to become a hunter.

SOG Knives was looking to add to their growing ensemble of stories from the front, SOG Observations. The goal of these stories is to provide a bridge for those that are new to the SOG community and provide something interesting and inspirational to those that are seasoned pros.

Creating a story where the outcomes are unpredictable means planning and filming for every possible outcome. What if there were no Elk in the area? What if in the rugged back country he was injured? What if he was able to find an elk, track the elk, but couldnt find a single shot?

What was the culmination of days in the backcountry, complimented with a bitter cold storm, howling winds, multiple summits of 13,000+ ft ridge lines, and weeks of editing, is an authentic narrative of how someone attempting something for the first time can find their way into a new community with determination and grit.
